Dr Marnie Howlett
Dr Marnie Howlett is a Departmental Lecturer in Russian and East European Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) and Oxford’s School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA). Marnie's research lies at the nexus of geopolitics, cartography, borders, and nationalism within Central and Eastern Europe. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Ukraine and surrounding countries analysing the role of borders in shaping grassroots dynamics and political identities. She is currently working on two book monographs exploring the role of territory for shaping nationalism and identity. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she has been working on several projects analysing Ukrainians’ views around territorial concessions and war outcomes, including running 5 public opinion polls and conjoint survey experiments in the country. Her main research interests also include the use of digital, visual, and spatial methods for political research.
